Long time no "see"

At
the moment, I'm enjoying some peace and quiet while
Skip and Katie both nap, and this is our first
weekend in over a month without house guests.
If you check out the pictures, you'll find we had a 40th birthday party the last weekend of April. We had a BLAST - got to see a lot of people we don't usually get to see, including family from Omaha and Denver, friends from Kansas City, Grand Island, Des Moines and Chicago. It was kind of a downer, though, that my parents weren't here - my Dad tore a retina in not one but FOUR places the Monday after Easter. Doctor's orders: no TV, no reading, no computer, no driving, no flying. For a WEEK! Holy buckets what does one do for a WEEK with nothing to "see"? (Mom gets out of the loony bin next Tuesday.) Dr. made him stay home in case there were any complications - and there were - he had to have two more laser surgeries to get the retina all fixed up. Good news is that he's been back to the doctor a couple of times for follow ups and all is looking very good, thankfully! But it was a total bummer not having Mom & Dad here for the big party.
Skip's mom DiAnn and her nurse/roommate/friend Angie of course along for the ride; they arrived in the wee hours of Saturday of the party, thanks to an accident along I35 south of OKC. As usual, we planned for them to stay for an extended period since it's so challenging for them to get here. The Tuesday after the party I had to go to Arizona for work; I returned to DFW on Wednesday, called the house, no answer so called Skip on his cell phone - they were admitting DiAnn to the ER. Turns out her calcium levels were elevated - which can make one very nonresponsive and groggy. A week at Centennial Medical Center got her flushed out, and they ran some additional tests and found a slightly enlarged thyroid which may be the culprit, actually. It wasn't big enough or otherwise odd enough to require surgery - so DiAnn went home with orders to check on it in about six months. I'm happy to report that DiAnn went home looking and acting much much improved!
Katie continues to be a total hoot, although she misses her Mimi a lot (she'll walk by the room where Mimi stayed and say "No Mimi" - and when we drove by the hospital once she cried "Mimi!! Mimi!!" like we needed to stop to visit Mimi). She's very big into transportation now - school buses (oooo buh!), DART buses (daah buh!), Daddy Cah, Mommy Cah, and Mimi Cah (you'd think she was from New England ...). She's very good at identifying the different types of cars - I have an Acura MDX and she NEVER mistakes another SUV for my car; ditto Mimi's Chrysler minivan although she struggles a bit with the Daddy Cah. She's also very good with her letters as she can recite her ABCs, knows her letters by name, and even shocked me the other day by writing a "Y" on a pad and saying "Y! Y!" She counts 1-10 with ease and tries to get to 20, although she repeats a few of the teens and 'eleven' sounds a lot like 'ebeben' which is pretty cute. And periodically she just starts counting in Spanish.
Of course we do have our terrible two moments - dining out has become quite a challenge; Skip and I went through one meal in Kansas City separate but at the same table - he ate while I hauled Katie out then he returned the favor. She was in TOTAL meltdown mode and we didn't want to ruin anyone else's lunch, so we took her outside. And Katie's been known to have the periodic fit, and she likes to throw things which is NOT a lot of fun when one is in the car, especially when the missile is launched at the driver's head. And she likes to take off shoes and socks - and put her socks on her hands. Whatever - she's two.
Well, I'm hoping I have another hour of Katie nap left ... so I can get an hour of Mommy nap in.
