Katie keeps growin', Mommy gets a physical
10/20/2007 09:29
Well, it's not an official weight - but we think
Katie now weighs in the ballpark of 18 pounds . It
wasn't very scientific - Daddy got on the scale
without Katie and then with her, and the difference
was a whopping 18 pounds. I believe it!
Finally got around to posting some new pictures. The pictures of cousins Andy and Christian were actually taken at Paul's house - Paul is my mother's cousin, actually, and his daughter Tiffany, son-in-law Andy, and grandson Christian all live with Paul in Arlington, TX (about an hour from our house - but still in the DFW area, if you can believe that!). Paul had gone fishing with his other son-in-law, and we were invited over for some grilled fish and birthday cake for Paul's birthday. Katie had a great time, as did Skip and I! We hope to return the favor to the Kunces soon and have them all up here for some football watchin' on the big screen.
We all went up to Nebraska last weekend, so that Skip and I could go to the Nebraska-Oklahoma State game. We stayed in Council Bluffs, IA (just across the river from Omaha) in a hotel, and Angie and DiAnn joined us there - they got to watch Katie for the day. Boy, what a debacle of a football game - coming off of a big, national-TV audience loss to Mizzou the week before, led onto the field by the 1997 National Championship Huskers (lead by Dr. Tom), the 2007 squad was just FLAT. It's tradition at Nebraska games to release red balloons when the Huskers first score - and it was so bad we were releasing balloons for first downs (the score was 38-0 at half time, in favor of OSU). Skip and I did stay for the whole game - it was nice in the second half, having a lot of wiggle room since about 50% of the stadium had cleared out at half time. At least the administration has taken some action in firing Steve Pederson, the Nebraska AD, and putting Tom Osbourne in as interim AD. How long Callahan and his motley crew will last, though, remains to be seen. Skip will go to the NU-K State game in November with his friend Mack - who knows, it may be the last time any one sees Callahan coaching at Nebraska.
Katie continues to try one new food a week, and so far her pantry consists of oatmeal, rice cereal, bananas, peas, sweet potatoes and last night we tried carrots for the first time. So far she seems to really enjoy everything and hasn't had any problems with any of it. Mommy & Daddy aren't so crazy about the bananas, though - the poopie diapers afterwards are quite a challenge (let's just say we may need to begin using a mortar trowel to get the poo off of her little tush).
I went and had a physical yesterday - just a "normal" one (or, as I like to say, one where I didn't have to count the dots on the ceiling). Will get blood work back next week, but I did ask the doc about pain in my right wrist (yep, carpel tunnel, goodie get to wear a VERY attractive brace now) and a twitch in my left eye - he said the eye twitch is due to sleep deprivation. Big surprise there - it started when I went back to work. Baby + working + keeping up a house = sleep deprivation.
Tomorrow Skip and I are off to Houston to see the hated Titans come to town (the Titans are the old Oilers, and to add insult to injury, the Texans passed on Houston native Vince Young in the draft in favor of relatively unheard of Mario Williams, a DB). My friend Debbie is coming over to watch Katie all day - we did a little Katie 101 last night with Debbie just to help get her ready. Hope we don't come home to find Debbie passed out on the couch!
This next week I am off to San Antonio for a work meeting, the following weekend we are home (still debating whether we want to watch the Huskers in Austin ... that could be a massacre), then the following weekend we're all off to AZ, Skip and Katie will stay through Monday and then I'll stay on until Wednesday as I have meetings out there. Not sure if that will be my last travel trip this year or not - but I do really enjoy my job and I like the new messages coming out of the CVS|Caremark CEO. Skip teases me - I won't go near a Walgreen's any more, it's gotta be CVS pharmacies all the time! (The hefty employee discount sure helps!)
Well, will sign off for now - got some laundry to do since we won't be home tomorrow.

Why do baby bananas come back out dark green??
10/05/2007 18:44
Well, Katie is five months old now ... so here's what
she's up to. Sorry we've been remiss in putting new
pics out there - apparently when we stay home, we
don't take very many pictures!!
Katie is now eating cereal and she just started on bananas (doc recommends introducing her to just one new food a week, and this week it was 'nanas). She LOVES them, and she does pretty well with her cereal, too, although she's quite the mess when she's all done. We've been feeding her in her car seat as she's not quite sitting up by herself yet - we do have a high chair but she sorta slouches over to one side and that doesn't work out so well. And yes, bananas come out as dark green - it's funky. So will peas be yellow? Tune in next week to find out, that's the next food to try!
You can tell when she's playing on the floor that she's starting to figure out she has legs and they're meant to get her from point A to point B, but she's just not quite sure how to make 'em work. For the longest time, we could not get her to do "tummy time", but now as soon as you lay her down: FLIP onto her tummy. If she's awake she's very good about getting up on her arms and getting a good look around; if she's sleeping she still turns over to her tummy, but she rests her head on her forearms a lot of the time. The other thing she's doing now when she sleeps is tucking her legs under her and sticking her butt up in the air while she's sleeping - when she gets up in the morning she has red marks on her knees!!
